Any bartenders out there? Do a lot of people actually order their Martini this way? Do you cringe at the extra trouble of having to pour the martini into the sharker, shake it vigorously, and then pour it back into the glass?

I guess what I'm really asking is (and this applies to everyone - not just bartenders): if James Bond walked into your bar and asked for a Martini - shaked, not stirred, would you spit in his drink before you shook it up?

A proper martini is made by placing some dry vermouth in a cocktail mixer with ice for a minute or so. Then drain off the vermouth and melted ice. Then add the gin (or vodka for a vodka martini), stir and strain into a martini glass. This means the remnant of vermouth is just enough to flavour the gin. I also prefer to add a twist of lemon rather than an olive.

If you shake rather than stir you will melt too much ice and dilute the drink.

Most martinis (vodka martinis anyway) are served shaken whether you ask for them that way or not. This chills the drink and cuts the vodka and is considered the proper way to prepare one. So no, the bartender would likely not spit in Mr. Bond's drink.

Actually, shaken is the proper way to make a martini. It gets the drink much colder than mixing in a couple of ice cubes and stirring before straining. On the rocks is for the unwashed masses or for lazy/uneducated bartenders.

A good martini is generally always shaken. The only time one might stir is when you have a pitcher full.

If I was a bartender, and someone asked for a Vodka martini, shaken not stirred, I would slug them in the jaw.

A proper martini is made with gin, not vodka. That's why, if you want a martini made with vodka, you order a "vodka martini".

A proper martini is never shaken.

James Bond is a fictional character.
