A thermostat is an automatic temperature regulator which works by starting or stopping the supply of heat The most visible ones in your house is the thermostat for the room temperature. It is the little box on a wall with numbers that you set for the desired temperature of your house. People generally dont pay attention to that one. Check out your fridge, it could either be on the hinged area of the door by the middle or in the rear wall of the appliance.
While you are in the kitchen there is another thermostat for the stove.
The problem if older thermostats is that they use mercury in the design. Most states will ask you to remove these thermostats for proper mercury disposal.

A thermostat is used in a very wide variety of applications including industrial, business and consumer devices where there is a need for a mechanical control of a heating or cooling action. Indoor environmental controls such as heating and air-conditioning use thermostats. Vehicle cooling systems, industrial production activities and even space travel and platform units are where some other thermostat controlled applications are likely to be found.

A thermostat is used in various places. It can be used on your wall, in your car (one of those things that hang from the ceiling), or even in your pocket.
It is mostly used in poorer countries, such as China. In the United States, people just check the temperature online or on the radio, where it is continuously repeated.

I hope this helps.
