How can I get into a BS/MD medical program from High school my grades weren't all that great because of a family problem....

Unfortunately, the BS/MD programs are all highly selective. They want top students who are ready to jump in and excell in highly intense courses immediately. If you've had less than a stellar academic experience in high school, regardless of the reason, you would, in all honestly, not be served well by an accelerated BS/MD program. You'd be much better off at a college where you'll be able to reach your full potential academically before going on to medical school. Luckily, there are many such colleges out there - look for a solid science program, good academic advising, support services, and a strong med school placement rate. If you're meant to be a doctor, you'll get there. Good luck.

If you are already out of high school and are thinking such thoughts, my recommendation would be to go to your local community college and take your basic courses, math, English, science and history. Focus on getting straight A's. Stay there for two years and get an associates degree. While there, spend every moment of your "Spare" time, volunteering at nursing homes and hospitals. This will come in VERY handy later, both for community service as well as getting letters of recommendation from those you worked for and with. Then, begin applying at the four year universities. Talk with the admissions officer amd guidance consellor about your intentions. They will get you onto the right course of study for a solid and diverse pre-med bachelors of science degree. Do extremely well there and then start the admissions process for med school. Best of luck! And study hard!!!
