A reputable agent will charge you a percentage of your earnings on each job. If you are asked for money up front (either as an actor or writer) turn and run. Agents earn their fees only if they are getting jobs for their clients. The ones asking for money up front are scam artists.

Agents do not charge. The typical commision for an agent is 10%. The agent takes his 10% from the check the actor receives for his work in a commercial, film, televison, industrial, etc.

When the agent receives the check from the production company he will take his 10% off the top and give a check to the actor.

A SAG franchised Talent Agent takes a 10% commission off the top, of the actor's salary. The check is sent to the actor's Talent Agent.

A check, for the actor, is written by the agent and given to the actor.

An agent should cost nothing. They should only make a commision based on the acting gigs that you are paid.
