I don't think the French can stab us in the back since we expect nothing out of them. The French work for the french. If the French were really in trouble, they know that the US would be there to help. They are part of the coalition in Afghanistan, so they are our allies there.

The French are our friends, but it's not at all certain that they're still our allies.
It does not bother me that the Quai d'Orsay does not support everything we want. "Chacun à son goût." But promising to support us in the UN and then reneging and refusing to say a word in our defense, as the French did a few years ago, is not the action of an ally.

Unlike the US,France has a democratically elected head of state.Not one who payed for his position.
The govt. also listen to the people and their wishes.
As has been shown over the Iraq debacle,the French will stand up to your face and tell you you're wrong.They don't need to stab anyone in the back

The French are our allies, they just didn't support the war in Iraq. Weren't they smart........
