Hello. I have 3 Peugeot 405's, and four Peugeot 205's. I live in Belgium and have only seen the 1.9 liter XU9 fuel injected engine. It has 8 valves, but the M16 version of this engine has 16 valves for greater acceleration. (plus there are carburated 1.9 engines and diesel too). I do ALL of my own mechanical work.
The 1.6 liter fuel injected engine was offered in the smaller Peugeot 205 and is called the XU5 engine. Last sold in 1998. Personally I think the 405 would be underpowered with less than a 1.9 FI engine.
All of these engines run on unleaded 95 octane gasoline. I have only seen 87, 89, 91, 93 octane gas when I visit the USA . I am guessing you are American? If you need to buy a used 1.6 or 1.9 liter engine, now is the time because everybody is junking these old cars now in Europe, or shipping them to eastern Europe and Africa.

Yes you can. It was exported to many countries in the world, except USA and Canada. It is widely available in some arab markets like Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. It might be harder to find one in Europe.
