My boyfriend loves to write me poems, and is convinced that he's a prolific poet. The things he writes are so cheesy they would make greeting cards cringe. But I love him, and I really do appreciate the gestures. Sometimes I'm just not sure if he's joking or if he seriously wants me to buy into his poetry. It's just so pastoral-lovebird-ish and overly cliched in its imagery. I can't tell if he's being sincere or if he just needs to flower things up a little to make it seem sincere. Am I being too cynical or critical?

lol : ) I'm sorry, I shouldn't be laughing. He is just trying his best to make you happy and expresses his feelings the best way he can to show how much love he has for you. If you tell him the truth that his poetry sucks, you are going to hurt his feelings BIG time. This is not about poetry, this is about what he is doing and the efforts he is taking to make you happy, in the best way HE can. These poetries probably take many his sleepless nights and aches of his heart and mind. I think, for you it will be only a good manner to appreciate his efforts.

I think it's nice that your b/f is writing you poems. Even though his writing style is bad you shouldn't put him down for his efforts. It's obvious that he has strong feelings for you and wants to impress you and show that he cares. Now if he expressed to you that he wanted to make writing poetry into a career, then by all means express your feelings to him, but do so gently. Advise him that he needs practice and suggest that maybe he could broaden his horizons by trying different ways of expressing himself through poetry. Maybe get him a book on how to write poetry. Carol Burke and Molly Best Tinsley's "The Creative Process" is an excellent resource.

Well, first of all, you should understand that it is really sweet that he would take his time to write you these poems. I wish my boyfriend did that!! Then, well I guess it would be really anoying if someone wrote you a poem that was not good, but then thought it was good. Figure out if he has any backround in writing poetry. This might help you out a little bit. Sometime, you can ask him how he writes his poetry. You should explain that it was really sweet of him, but that it's kind'a bad. It really depends on your boyfriend character!
Sorry if this does not help, but you sure ave a problem in your hands!!!!!

Someone may like it. We all have different tastes.

Don't tell him your hate it, but you don't have to cry, and be gushy about it and go overboard. At least make him feel like he did a good job, and you truly appreciate his effort - especially if he wrote something for you. While it may be bad, its the thought that counts.

Tell him that his poetry touches you. If he wants you elaborate, then say that no one has ever given you poetry like that.

Kiss him, smile and place it in a box you never open.

if you like the person then react as if you like it, if you don't like the person, let them know that you didn't like it. it doesn't have to be verbal, if could be something physical that tells the person you didn't like it.
