Alright soldier , as requested here are some things filipinas like .
1) jewelry (some earrings would be nice , or a necklace )
2) perfume (something they can't get there, nothing cheap )
3) clothes (its true that filipinas love american name brands )
4) something religious , a hardcover bible or gold cross necklace( most filipinas have strong faiths )
5) music cd's and dvd movies ( possibly also a personal dvd player )
6) for the family Tee shirts that say Germany
If you would like to learn to speak tagalog the army offers a language program though skillport / skillsoft , check it out on your AKO , its a rosetta stone language course .
Don't try to buy too much though , and make sure that you get postal insurance . Also there is a service that you can buy gifts from and have them delivered in the Philippines its kind of expensive though .
Most importantly let her know that you care and are thinking of her, this is very important . You could bye her the moon but if you dont tell her you love her it won't matter . I suggest a card with whatever you give her saying something like : Mahal kita , maganda .
I hope this helps brother , Army pride , HOOAH !!!!

First off, thank you for serving your country.

I am married to a Tagalog woman and I don't think you could go wrong with any of the suggestions that I have read. I don't know what your budget is though.

A great gift would be a G3 capable phone that she could see you on while you talk or text. Remember this is the SMS capitol of the world. A Filipina rarely goes anywhere without her phone, so if she doesn't already have one, that would be my first choice. Maybe Google around for "Globe Philippines" or "Smart Philippines" for more information.. Also Google "My Ayala" as they have a gift website setup for the Philippines.

I have not found a good Tagalog program yet and I have tried a lot of them. The language is very different so direct translations don't seem to work for me. I would suggest to tune into ANC which I believe broadcasts in Germany too. I have learned more from watching Tagalog movies and news than any other source.

One other thing to keep in mind: Anything that is made in the "states" is considered a treasured gift. Send her a US Army shirt maybe, anything La Coste like their new perfume, or Marks and Spencer is another coveted brand name. I would not send expensive jewelry though I won't cover why here, but this could put pressure on her to be pawned if a family member is in need. Save that for when you are face to face. This is just my opinion. I did attach a very good Yahoo group below that is all about the Philippines.

Get her something. Anything. The Filipinos just LOVE to get some pasalubong. My wife and many other people here have their display cases full of porcelain figurines. One of those might be appreciated. Philippines is a very religious catholic country. Since you're in Germany, maybe you or one of your friends can go to Prague in the Czech rep. and get one or more small statues of Baby Jesus of Prague (which for some reason is really big here). The prices start at 300 czk (about 11 euros).

Finally, good luck with Tagalog. I can't even find a decent dictionary. Got a really big one, but half the time can't find what I'm looking for.

Give her jewelry; like a really nice gold necklace. It must be real gold to really impress her. Tell her that the necklace is a token of your love for her. And, that by wearing it around her neck she is signifying that she is yours no matter how far you may be stationed. (What's with this teardrop coming from my eye?)

For her family, I guess, you better ask her what her family might like to receive from abroad. A polite Filipino family wouldn't be asking much from a foreigner dating their daughter. American made chocolates are alright.

From what part in the Philippines does your young maiden come from? Every region in this country has their own styles of traditions and cultures.

I think you will be able to find institutions offering Tagalog language-teaching programs at Google.

Good Luck, man! Love her with all your heart. :-)

If Darwin surely created evolution, he's God. He became a scientist. He made observations which all appeared to assist an extremely existence like concept this is surely older than Christianity. in the mean time, we've made no longer a single discovery that would even plenty as hint on the literal interpretation of Genesis. maybe your blessing is rather a curse in cover, yet I, myself have consistently been extra of a one woman guy. i attempt to maintain the drama to a minimum. good success with those women folk that God so graciously proficient you to. you will likely choose it in some unspecified time sooner or later.

I am a Filipina dating an American.

I love receiving gifts from my bf! Does not need to be fancy - anything that reminds me of him. Maybe a nice picture of you and your girl together in a very nice frame. Or a locket with your pictures in it (again, need not be expensive jewelry). He sends me CDs of songs we both like and those I enjoy as well.

For the family, I would suggest flowers and maybe a bottle of good wine they can enjoy for dinner or something (I know my family would like that). And a very nice note, that is what will make it special :) Or maybe a digital camera so they can take pictures of any family gatherings they have (which Filipinos love and have a lot of!) with a request to send some of their pictures back to you so that you can take part in their culture and tradition.

Goodluck!

All my wife wants is gold, gold, gold, and not nice 18k or Thai Baht stuff, but piles of 14K silvery-looking garbage. Necklaces and bracelets especially. Besides that she likes consumer electronics like iPod Video, portable DVD players, although we haven't bought her any because she can't seem to think of any practical use for them in her life. And of course she likes "cute," and by cute she means cheap, purses, wallets, and clothing with insipid phrases on them, all better suited to pre-teens, which apparently is the style in the PH as well as Japan and elsewhere.

RosettaStone makes excellent immersion language programs. They have programs for Tagalog (and for German, for her, if that's an option)

anything can be given as a gift, if you really know her, then you know what to give her. it depends on the person, some are ok with just about anything, some are specific as to what gift they would like to receive
