I'm a toronto maple leafs fan. our team hasn't performed as well as new teams like Minnesota wild, Nashville predators, Atlanta Thrashers... these teams are not even 5 years old and right now are al the top of the standings. how is it that these new teams are able to do so much better than one of the original 6??!?

Fan support isn't the answer.. We all know Toronto has plenty of fan support! And Atlanta doesn't actually have much (not a good place to put any sports team! They couldn't even sell out when the world series was there!)

The answer is that it's the new NHL. New coaches on the new teams are getting new, fresh players who know how the new NHL works. These coaches know how to build their team from the bottom up, not like some established teams who rely solely on one or two star players who are puck hogs and don't fit into the new NHL at all.

Buffalo's Lindy Ruff has the new NHL all figured out. We're not a new team, but we're number 1 in the standings. The rest of the teams will figure it out and catch up eventually.

The Leafs are doing fine. Don't worry about them too much... well, until they are up against us in the playoffs! :)

Throughout sports, when a new team entered the league they would get the first pick in the draft and that was all. At some point during the 1980's, expansion teams in all major sports had an easier time of getting established. The revenue generated by gate receipts, parking, concessions, and luxury box suites were negotiated into any deal that involved the use of brand new arenas. That depended on what a team negotiated and how much of the arena they actually owned. Most teams leased the use of the facility and were not as profitable. This gave the newer expansion teams an easier start than older expansion teams. It makes sense because the NHL and NBA have lost teams because they failed to draw fans due to the ongoing losing that had a lot to do with lack of revenue.

All the "new" expansion teams have great players since at one time or another they were in the bottom quarter of the league and picked very high in the last 6 draft years. Other than Minnesota that really hasnt been that bad since returning to the NHL, the others drafted top 5 but as well made great trades.. Being last has it's bright spots.. just look at Pittsburgh.

The Maple Leafs are making enough money as is they don't need the Stanley cup cause if they do win it they will actually lose money in the long run by paying players bonus money and this players will want more money for the following year after winning the cup. the Wild, Preds and Trashers need to start winning there games and really try to go for the Stanley cup to bring in the attendance to make there money. Leafs owners only care about the money not the Stanley cup. as long as they have a team that can compete in the regular season and they can sell out the arena that's enough for the owners to make them happy. cheer for a team that the owners want to win the cup not just think about the money, maybe a team like the Montreal Canadiens.

You are a Make Belief fan. Sort of says it all. Uh, "your" team has not played as well as tons of teams since 1967.

But figure it out, good drafting!

Look at the Original Six:
Boston--Jacobs is an idiot.
Chicago--Wirtz is a dinosaur doofus.
Tarranna--Idiots fill the bldg so no incentive by money grubbing MLE to really build a Cup team.
Montreal--No more Roy...and to some extent no Pollock as GM.
NY Rangers--never were any good. A Cup every 54 years.
Detroit--come on, three Cups in the Ken Holland as GM era. They are doing fine.

I'm a Detroit fan, and when the new teams came in, they got first choice at all the draft picks. Now those picks have gotten good. Just because a team is old, doesn't mean they will always win. The Chicago Cubs haven't won a World Series in almost 100 years, and the Red Sox and White Sox had about 90 years in between their titles

A hard salary cap.

The fans don't have 15 year with our team players they "need" to keep to put people in the stands.

Free agency.

Many of the teams have also hired good hockey minds to run the organization, which is based on winning games not making a profit. I wish the Bruins would catch on to that idea, if you put together a team that wins the Stanley Cup you can get away with charging more for tickets not just have them be competative.

Dawn S fans don't play the game.
The newer teams are better because they keep up with the times. Toronto lives in the past. There for awhile they had nothing but old players. You can't group ALL of the original 6 in that statement. Detroit is doing okay.

The westernmost area of Toronto's expert CMA is the city of Oakville, even nonetheless maximum evaluate the city of Burlington area of it besides. Hamilton isn't area of it, not to show Kitchener or Waterloo. whether, you are the final option in asserting that Hamilton is on the area of Toronto. So close in certainty that the city does lie interior the Maple Leafs territory, defined with the aid of the NHL shape as 50 miles from the city of Toronto. Kitchener-Waterloo would not lie in this territory, whether it does lie interior the Leafs broadcasting region. the belief of Hamilton getting an NHL team is particularly in basic terms yet in any different case of helping a 2d Southern Ontario team. that would propose in Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, Mississauga, or perhaps interior the northern area of Toronto. Regardless, it somewhat is considered as needed with the aid of many interior the NHL community. The region of Southern Ontario in question, usually observed because of the fact the Golden Horseshoe, had a inhabitants of 6.4 million in 2006 and that's predicted to be over 7 million today. this is the 4th greatest marketplace in North us of a of america (in the back of ny, l. a., and Chicago), the third greatest company marketplace in North us of a of america (in the back of ny and Chicago), and has a collective GDP greater advantageous than the finished province of Quebec. it is likewise served with the aid of in basic terms one NHL team (a 2d, the Sabres, are interior of driving distance nonetheless), the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs at the instant are not in basic terms the NHL's maximum rewarding franchise, yet one in all maximum rewarding in North American activities. MLSE, the Leafs be sure business corporation, pulled in an envisioned $500 million in sales final year and $one hundred million in income. The team has the utmost value ticket costs interior the league (AINEC), generally because of the certainty that they carry a monopoly over the marketplace. A 2d NHL team in this region could break this monopoly, making greater NHL tickets available (develop the availability, to assist stem call for), and of path, be ridiculously rewarding. with the aid of the NHL's estimates revealed interior the Phoenix Coyotes financial disaster case, a 2d Southern Ontario team could be between the suitable 5 maximum rewarding interior the league. ny has 3 communities, l. a. has 2, why shouldn't Toronto (which has much greater hockey followers than the two) have an probability at a 2d?

b/c in Hockey teams get to hold on to their draft choices long enough for them to make an impact on the field. Most trades in the NHL are at the top level not the minor league lvel, so a team that drafts high for a few years in a row, winds up having a nice pool of players, these players do well in teh minors and make their teams better, now u wind up with a very strong farm system and make your way to the top.
