dude, you just missed the huge black friday sale!

best buy had a decent system (good for typing ,surfing net, etc) for $250 and another for $380 -- NO MAIL IN REBATES!

compusa had a dual core for $550.

now that i've made your mouth water, check these places:

compusa.com
bestbuy.com (really do have best buys a lot)
circuitcity.com
officemax.com
officedepot.com
walmart.com (have a linux laptop under $500 i think)
ebay.com
sagernotebook.com (not so cheap but they have great stuff)

and others i cant recall right now - search google.

first answerer is right.. it depends on what you're looking for and how you define cheap. if you're willing to spend $600 you'll find something for sure. if you can wait a while, be on the lookout for sales. try to avoid mail in rebates - take forever to get your money back (and you have to chase them down a lot of times... they just conveniently forget to send you your check).

Update: MegaNerd is not entirely right. I just bought a laptop for $500 and it is Vista ready AND dual core! Many HP laptops (maybe the refurbished ones don't) come Vista ready if you buy them now -- but make sure you back up your OS before you wipe the partition!!!!! Also, note that many people have said that Vista isn't very "revolutionary" compared with its other releases in the past. May be something worth looking into before fussing over it.

When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them, and everything is Vista ready.

Microsoft is about to release its latest operating system, Vista, in January. It’s going to make all of these “bargain” computers nothing but JUNK as soon as it’s released. The reason that you are seeing so many cheap systems on the market right now is because a lot of them CAN’T RUN Vista and the merchants are trying to dump them as hard and fast as they can before Vista shows up and everyone learns what a piece of crap they were sold for $500 (or whatever).

Anyway, I bought a complete, new system from stupidcheapcomputers.net with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.

I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.

Good luck!

What do you mean by cheap. There are decent systems on Tigerdirect.ca or even at your local Staples etc. just depends on what you are looking to do with it. If you are looking at gaming you want to spend the money. If it is just for school essays and surfing, than a 500$ system from staples would be enough

1299 wont purchase you doodly squat. save up some extra thousand and purchase a great computer,. affordable computer is a shitty computer (excuse the swearing) besides the undeniable fact that, for those $1299 you could construct an extremely superb computing device computing gadget
