For most people, the brain is an inert piece of plastic used to make the skull big enough to fit into a baseball cap.

Nope. That whole, "your brain is a muscle...exercise it" is just a figure of speech. A lie in the form of a motivational saying.

Brain tissue is a lot of fat, some blood vessels, some nerves, some glands...not a muscle. Plus some cerebrospinal fluid to cushion the big blob of fat inside your skull. Then, there's dura mater, a tough covering between the brain and skull. The brain itself doesn't even have pain receptors (a headache is pain from the stuff around the brain.)

I don't know exactly how the brain works, but I do know it isn't a muscle.

While the brain is NOT muscle tissue, many brain areas act analogous to a muscle.

In other words: If you exercise them, they get larger (literally), if you don't exercise them, they decay.

For example, the size of finger representations of musicians is literally a function of years practiced.

Conversely, blindness can atrophy visual areas.
So the brain is a muscle - not literally but figuratively and metaphorically.

Your friend is correct. The brain is not a muscle. It is made of neuron tissue. But, the heart is a muscle!

It is completely nerve tissue with collagen to hold it together. I did have a girlfriend who appeared only to have muscle tissue for a brain when she walked off a bus backwards because a sailor said he'd grab her seat when she got of.

The brain is made of neurons (nerve cells), not myocytes (muscle cells), so I'm afraid your friend is correct...
