To really get all the wax off candlesticks, put down a layer of thick newspaper and top it with paper towels. Place the candle sticks on the towels and blow dry them on high. The wax will totally melt off without damaging the candlesticks. To get inside any tight areas, use a q-tip while you are holding the blow dryer over that area. Of course you need to let the sticks cool before you pick them up, but you can gently swab off some of the now liquid wax while you are blow drying.

Put them in the freezer until the wax is brittle, then it should chunk right off. Be careful you don't scratch the candlesticks using a tool to get the wax off. I use a fingernail or something plastic. I have had candles melt down into things, and freezing the wax seems to shrink it a little bit. It usually pops right out of any well, like the bottom of a votive cup or deep candleholder.

Put it in the freezer for about 15 minutes. The wax will flake right off.
