Good spelling skills indicates a high lingustic intelligence. People who are good spellers have a good command of the English language and its uses. They can also memorize things that they see (words in texts) and understand patterns (that make sounds, or indicate languages of origins and common letter groupings). However, a great artist or architect might not have excellent spelling skills. There are many different types of intelligence. Only some of those can be indicated by good spelling skills.

I think it all depends on the individual. I don't think there is an absolute rule that can be followed. For example, some are simply much more intelligent in the areas of math and science, working with numbers, rather than languages and words.
As for overall intelligence, however, I cannot bring myself to believe that someone who fails to spell properly is too intelligent. Misspelling large, extravagant words is one thing, but completely butchering the language is a completely different story.

It's spelling that is slightly incorporated into the intelligence quotient total. Word use and a wide vocabulary help with intelligence. There are a myriad of factors to variably affect intelligence, and spelling is just one of the spectrum of human ability. That's just my thought.

Spelling is very important and it does go hand in hand with vocabulary. A poor speller is a poor speaker. Although, people that use larger words don't necessarily know what they're saying let alone know how to spell them.

I would have to say
Yes... it shows they are "smart" in that category, but does being smart, in a certain category, imply intelligence ?
And
No... Being able to take something that is a little dull and ragged and make it shine into something beautifully eye catching, that is intelligence...
The only reason I liked English class was because my teacher saw my potential, and helped me develop this skill even more, she took a student with an undeveloped skill and made that student shine : )
Intelligence is noticed because it is shared, and those who obtain it want to help others develope theirs.

Your ability to manipulate isn't completely relevant to your intelligence. It can often be indicative of other unintelligent traits, but since written language has only existed for about two minutes on the evolutionary scale, it's not the absolute best judge of intelligence.

On a forum like this, it's difficult to distinguish a terrible speller from a terrible typist. I confess to being the latter. But have learned how to proof read.

Spelling does not equal intelligence per se. Spelling equals attention to detail and ensuring that your thoughts are complete and accurate.

In my view, poor spelling means one of four things.
Lack of intelligence.
Lack of respect for the reader.
Lack of education.
English is not their first language.
I have great sympathy for the last two, not much use for the first two.
