JFK sustained back injuries during World War II when a Japanese Destroyer sliced through the PT boat, PT 109 he was commanding. The boat was cut in two, and he was thrown up in the air and slammed down onto the deck of the sinking boat. Take note, this severe injury did not stop him from saving the lives of his surviving crew members nor swimming many miles in the ocean.

He was photographed on a few occasions that I can recall in a wheelchair, but mostly he is seen using crutches. The surgery in the late 50's was very serious and I believe he was photographed in a wheelchair then.

If he used a wheelchair in the White House, it is was not general knowledge. I cannot recall reading any text which addresses this issue. Crutches yes, a wheelchair, perhaps but it I don't think it is general knowledge if he did. By contrast, during his term in office he can be seen in photographs sailing and in home movies at the family compound in Hyannis Port quite mobile.

Yes, JFK was in a wheelchair for most of the second year of his presidency. He had originally hurt his back while repairing a roof at the family compound in Hyanisport, Mass. He later aggravated it playing touch football on the White House lawn with brothers Bobby and Teddy.

I'm sure he did. He had severe back problems and underwent several back surgeries that nearly killed him while he was in the senate.
