Wife and I are curious to know when her breasts will fill, or start to fill with breast milk. Should we start to pump milk or wait? Wife says they're hurting but, milk is not leaking. Just curious as am I.

they will never fill with milk, there are milk ducts in the breast that produce milk on demand if you are breast feeding then the milk will produce to the childs needs otherwise if you are pumping pump for between 10 to 20 mins per breast every 3 to 4 hrs and you will notice that the consistency and the amount of milk will gradually change, the more you pump the more milk you will produce, if your wifes breasts becaome painful and lumpy this means that some of the ducts have got blocked it can lead to infection it is a very painful condition but is easily remedied, she needs to sit in a warm bath and place a warm flannel on the top of her breast and firmly but gently brush in a downward motion toward the nipple, this can hurt at the start but as you shift the blockage and some milk expresses she will feel much better, it is important not to let the breast get swollen and lumpy, if she is in much pain she may need antibiotics,

There should be a fullness a about a month before the due date, but milk doesn't come in until 24 - 48 hours after the baby is born. Immediately after the baby is born, the breasts produce a liquid called colestrum, which is full of vitamins and antibodies to diseases your wife has been exposed to. The sooner she starts nursing, the sooner the baby gets the benefits of these nutrients

Usually milk doesn't develop until a day or two after the baby is born. She may find that between 36-40 weeks a yellowish liquid called colostrum (i think that's what they called it) may begin to leak from her chest though. As her breasts begin to grow with the pregnancy they will hurt more and more, to decrease the pain ice packs could help.

Dont do anything. If there is no milk, there is no need to pump. It is natural for them to hurt because the glands are swelling and she is getting more blood flow to her breasts. A warm heating pad can help or hot wash cloth to reduce the swelling. I dont know if the doctor can give her some suggestions, but you can ask.

there actually wont be milk until after the baby is born, generally 3-4 days. you dont say if she is pregnant or already had the baby. the first thing that comes out is actually called colostrom. it is best for the baby for the first few days then milk will start coming in.

you dont pump until after the baby is born...that is what i was told...and anyhow, milk does not immediately form as soon as the baby comes out...there is this liquid called colostrum that comes out, technically its not milk but it does nurish the baby until the real milk comes...
