Ok, well you are not the only finger biter in the bunch.. I have been doing this for as long as I can remember. Mostly around my thumbs, (it actually hurts to type right now). I have discovered it is a nervous habit, and the only thing that has stopped me from doing it is to have acrylic nails put on. It makes it harder to get to the skin. If you havent already tried that, as try to get your fingers to heal as much as possible and then go down and get your nails done. See if that helps.

Sounds like you need oral sensory input. Try chewing chewy foods (Starburst candy, dried apricots, Laffy Taffy, gum, etc.). Anything that will give you resistance when you chew. There are also rubbery type things you can put on the end of your pencils to chew, or "jewerly type things called "Chewlrey". The site referenced below is from www.abilities.com. Search sensorymotor, then oral motor. Can also type in "chewies". It's give you a whole bunch of products to choose from. Hopefully these will be a good alternative to your poor fingers.
Good luck!

Melanie, honey, you just have to be AWARE of the problem, which you are and substitute it with another "habit". For instance, put a rubberband around your wrist and every time you want to bite your fingers, snap the rubberband. Or use chewing gum. You can't bite your fingers with gum in your mouth. Besides the fact that it's unattractive, your hands and fingers/nails have so many germs on them that it's really a very unhealthy habit. So picture all of those little germs on your fingers, chew your gum and snap that rubberband. You can do it if you really want to and you'll be so proud of yourself. Godloveya, honey.
