Charles I was the son of James VI of Scotland and I of England. He was a Catholic, though his father and his country were Protestant. He believed in the divine right of kings and did not want parliament interfering with his rule. His problem was that only parliament could raise taxes so when he dissolved parliament he then had no money. He recalled Parliament and then dissolved it 11 times but a disastrous war in Scotland forced him to recall Parliament and this time they so angered him that he sent soldiers to arrest some of the members of parliament but 'the birds had flown'. There was the first Civil war in which Charles was roundly defeated, and he was urged to accept changes but he refused and so the second Civil war took place and he lost and lost his head.
