yes quite easy
1. turn off the electricty by finding the curcuit breaker and putting it in th "off" position. --- the fan will be off
2. turn off any wall switch for the fan.
3. there will be a single screw hling the cover plate near the ceiling. remove it and let the cover fall down.
4. disconnect the electrial wires -- usually by unscrewing the colored "caps" holdong the wires together.
5, now rotate the make the phisical disconnection of the fan - usually just twists in a bracket, but you may need to loosen a screw.
6. go to the big box store, pick the light you want, tell the gut there what size hole you have in ceiling and they will give help in mounting the new fixture.

RE:
I want to remove a ceiling fan and put in a small light fixture. Is this easy enough to do on my own?
I've never done anything electrical before. What do I need to know? I cannot hire anyone to do it and my husband hasn't got the first clue.

Ok, Looks like uzurhead knows what he is talking about, Go with him. Only thing you might have a tube screwed into the bracket in the ceiling, if so just remove it and the bracket, all you need for a light fixture is two screws to mount it, and two wire nuts to twist the wires together with, fixture should have a place for the bare ground wire to attach to. Good Luck

First, find the circuit breaker and turn off the power to the fan. As you disassemble the fan in place, you will find two screws that hold the fixture to the ceiling box. Disconnect the fan and lamp wires from the house wires and remove the fan. When you attach the light fixture, fasten the green ground wire first, Then connect your white to white and black to black wires. Fasten the light fixture to the ceiling box and assemble it. Turn on the circuit breaker and try the wall switch. Good Girl!

You should be able to do. Be sure and turn off the electricity at your breaker box never work on a live circuit. Make sure if the fixture you use to replace the fan has aluminum wire you use a salve that keeps the copper wire and the aluminum wire together. Aluminum wire is suppose to shrink and you end up with a bad connection. Get some good wire nuts to connect the wires together. You should see if you can find a good electrical( how to) book at the local library.

Its simple but remember safety first. I'm a woman and I usually do most of the electrical and carpentry in my own house. I hope I can help.
1) Be sure to turn off the power (main switch preferably). There's a gadget you can buy to check if its a live wire or not. It'll be up to you if you want to use one.
2)Connect wires(usually they're in the same color) by putting the two same wires in the cap. You don't really have to touch the wires to connect them. Twisting the cap will do it for you. And of course you have to unwrap the tip of each wires first.
3)If its all connected I suggest try it first before completely mounting the lights.
4)Turn the power on.
If it worked, congratulations!!!

first shut the power off
get a screw driver with various bits
hint: take off all the fan blades. bulbs and glass if any -this will make it easier to handle and lighter
loosen the 2 screws at the top of the fan nearest the ceiling. once loosened you should be able to twist the mounting under those screws and the fan is now off the ceiling.
unscrew the 2 caps and the green wire and the fan is now completely disconnected.
practise makes perfect
good for you!

There should be a black, white, and bare wire. Just connect them to the corresponding screws on the light fixture. It is very easy. You should first turn off the power at the circuit breaker because if the wires were reversed when first installed you can get a shock even if the wall switch is off.

If the fan has a wall switch, you are in good shape. If it has a chain to pull, it will be much harder, un less you install a remote control light. The wires coming into the ceiling box (from the attic) will be white, black, and a bare one. The light fixture will have a white, black, and bare wire. blk to blk, wht to wht, bare to bare. you can possibly buy a light "kit" for the fan, and have both.
