There is no actual way of communicating with your fish, although treating the fish well with good swimming space, a good diet, and some good fish friends, does give the fish an idea that you sort of care. Sorry about all the "comical" answers you've been given.

Well I don't really think fish have a smart enough of a brain to know how to communicate, so I guess you could just tap on the glass or something...but I don't think it will do anything but come to the glass or run away.

LoL... The only "communication" I can remotely report with my fish is them knowing when it is "food time" and swimming up to the top of the tank.

There's only one communication you get and that's 'Feed us!'.
If it's you that feeds them they'll come up to the top of the tank and get all agitated when you walk in the room. If you walk passed them they'll swim along side you in the tank.
