WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats on Saturday promised to help "forge a new direction" in the Iraq war when they take control of the U.S. Congress in January from President George W. Bush's Republicans.

They also vowed to clean up the scandal-rocked Congress, raise the federal minimum wage for the first time in a decade and address such concerns as the rising cost of education, health care and energy.

"This we will do, and much more -- not because we believe in the infinite wisdom of government, but because we believe in the innate goodness of our people and the promise of a brighter future in the land that we all love," Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland said in delivering his party's weekly radio address.Sectarian violence continues to rage," Hoyer said. "Our brave servicemen and women continue to be maimed and killed. And the war is not making our nation safer or more secure."

Anything that they do will definitely be an improvement. I have never seen Republicans make a bigger mess than they have under the leadership of Bush.

The federal minimum wage will be raised, with the support of the Republican party, so long as the bill contains protection for small businesses, which has been the position of the Republican party and President Bush right along. The last raise was 10 years ago. Bush has been in office for only 5 years and 10 months.

As to sectarian violence, incoming Representative Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota), a Muslim, wants to criminalize "profiling of Muslims". The incident involving six American Muslims having to be forcibly removed from a U.S. Airways plane, after they made anti-American statements and refused the pilot's request to disembark for additional passenger screening, came only two days after Ellison's speech at the conference of the Muslim activist "Council on American-Islamic Relations. Also, we have a new Judiciary Chairman, John Conyers (D-Michigan), who has already drafted a resolution to provide "special civil rights" for Muslims in America. Is sectarian violence likely to be reduced when we tolerate activist peace disturbances on our passenger planes and have this kind of representation in Congress?

Democrats have talked great sound bites. Action is another story left to the Republicans who take back Congress in 2008.

The Democrats are out for revenge. Pure, plain & simple. So my answer is a big HELL NO! They hate W for his stance on terror. The liberals will slash the military budget, start impeachment proceedings etc! I hope we can elect someone like Rick Santorum as President since I like his stance on the moral issues, but I could very easily throw my support behind Rudy G. Therefore, I'll never trust a smiling Democrat.

eh... they can only do so much if Bush vetoes anything... balance of power and all...

but I think they will try...and some of those things probably need to be done, so it will be interesting if Bush vetoes them...

I think you will see a much greater effort than the Republicans have made over the past few years to get things done...

Like many Congresses before them, they will make all these promises and then not keep them.

It doesn't matter who's in charge, Democrats or Republicans. It always happens.

Well most people hoped they'd do what your suggesting. Will they, don't forget Bush can veto anything they do so it will have to be a group effort.
But what the heck, can they screw up any worse than the current group. I don't think so.
