I don't think they're real in the sense that they turn into bats, actively drink blood, or can't stand daylight- these are all exaggerated features. Werewolf beliefs started on real fact- there are conditions where humans become covered in hair and begin to look like wolves. Vampirism (not the gothic fad now popular) is based on fact as well. Pica (not sure on spelling) is the disorder of desiring to eat strange objects and there are also disorders where a person craves the taste of blood (the coppery aspect of it). There are also people than cannot stand day light, they're eyes are too sensitive. Those conditions, to people of a few centuries ago, were scary and legends came about to explain it.
I like the Bram Stoker version of vampires. Its about the same idea that Anne Rice has- unlike werewolves, vampires mostly retain their human form so there's that natural aspect to the unnatural. They're romantic because they're seductive. Its the normal person's dance with the darkside. Dracula, the orginial bad guy, was incredibly well-mannered, seductive, and a true gentleman. If you've read the book, he is very kind and easy going with Jonathan Harker when he comes to visit. I think they're an incredibly romantic invention.
As for being cool or stupid, it all depends on the depiction. Like I said, Bram Stoker's version is impressive as is Anne Rice's. It gets a little taken to extremes with the B horror movies like "Bloodsuckers".

There is some very old manuscripts that say they were or are very real creatures. As for romantic they are dead animated and processed by a demon. As for a lover their hearts do not beat so there is no circulation so therefore they can not make love. No matter what you may feel or think drinking the blood of others is not cool. It is a curse and they are totally dammed for what they do.........................

That which is not real cannot be romantic.
