It literally means asking a question. In history it was an institution created by the Catholic church to get rid of people who did not believe in the right things. Historians argue about how many people were killed or maimed by it. But all agree that it was a lot.

My ex told me once that I would have been killed back during the inqusition but I informed him that that was not true because us witchs' ran it.
I said this because when someone was asked if they were a witch and they said "no" they would be burnt at the stake or crushed under rocks. On the other hand, if they said that they were a witch they would usually be banished from the town, but not killed.
Many innocent people were killed by the inqusition just in the practices they had of finding out if someone was a witch.
People would be drowned or beaten to death.
A lot of women were arrested as witchs only because they were pretty and the justice in charge wanted to have sex with them and that was the only way they could do it.

oldhippypaul is correct. The Inquisition was an extensive, organized system used to eradicate anyone opposed to Roman Catholic authority. The victims were mainly non-Catholics (like the Huegenots in France), but Catholics who spoke out against the leadership were also charged with heresy and subjected to torture and death.
