Tornados & hurricanes: none.
We almost never get either one.
Earthquakes? Literally hundreds -- but most are so small you can't feel them. Earthquakes that are strong enough to feel? About 1 every year or two. Strong enough to do damage? About 1 every 20-50 years.
A lot less than the east coast gets in hurricanes or the midwest gets in tornados :)

They don't get tornadoes in areas where there's water hurricanes are common to the area, but giving how SF's layout is hurricanes are less likely to happen, and the same goes for San Diego. Earthquakes are common in california. Contact Stanford or UCLA and talk to someone in their science departments and ask who does the research for earthquakes that hit the state annually.

I love BOTH!!! Im 28 and live in Scotland, UK and for the past 4 years my boyfriend and I have spent our 3 week vacation staying in San Francisco and driven down to San Diego. The road trip is fabulous, and i always find masses to do in both cities. It is true San Diego is warmer, but both have great climate (especially compared to the unpredictable Scottish summers) Id say the San Francisco attractions can be done repeatedly year after year, while i would not want to go to the likes of sea world more then once. Both have fantastic restaurants and bars and both are supper friendly. My only dilemma is knowing which Baseball team to support while im there. I love, love, love them both!! But at 17 you would probably do better in San Diego, i suppose, as drinking is out of the question.

hurricanes never
tornados none but we do get the rare funnel cloud in the central valley near Sacramento
earthquakes, hundreds a year as somebody else mentioned. you usually don't feel them until they are over 2.0 magnitude. And napa area usually has a few of those a year in the 3.0 to 4.0 range. The thing with earth quakes is that depending on how strong they are you can feel them for hundreds of miles.

Earthquakes happen often. I have lived in SF and its environs for the past five years, and have felt several. Go to
http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Maps/SF_Bay.html
for a live look at earthquake activity.
Tornados can, in fact, happen here, but they are rare. My job is very close to one of the most recent tornadoes in California. Go here:
http://tornado.sfsu.edu/Geosciences/StormChasing/cases/Sunnyvale/Sunnyvale.html
(Note: Despite the claim of another answerer, tornadoes can happen near water: they are called water spouts. Go here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_spout
Hurricane can also be called typhoons, cyclones, tropical storms, cyclonic storms and tropical depressions. Apparently no hurricane-strength storm has reached California (go to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane
under the subheading "Major Basins"). In my experience, I have never seen nor heard of a hurricane here, although I have experienced several strong rain and wind storms.
