Their only function is to look attractive and get the crowd cheering at a sporting event - hence the name "cheerleaders." The competitions are nothing more than beauty contests to compare tricks they can do so why do they think it's a sport?

I didn't say it was easy. I say it's not a sport. I'm not sure gymnastics is a sport either, merely a physical activity. Just because you compete as an individual doesn't make what you do a sport.

I'm sorry, but it's like calling Broadway acting and the circus sports just because they have to practice and learn the moves.

The dedication required to be a cheerleader for a professional sports team is similiar to what is required of athletes.
The endless hours of training, learning the moves, practice and the physical stamina to keep it up for hours at a time are all very difficult.
I'm not sure it is a true sport, but it is tough.
Gymnastics is even tougher, I do consider it a sport, even if I'm not interested in it. Kinda like soccer...

What is up with you? You have never cheered or done gym a day in your life have you? OK first of all the competitions we have take alot of time and practice! There are Judges jugging you on how good you are, and you compete against other teams!! So sorry to say honey it is a sport! And don't EVEN get me started on gymnastics! If that is not a sport then tell me dear why the hell is it in the Olympics? Then you ask if ice skating is a sport! Why don't you try to some of the stuff we have to. Then tell me if you don't consider it a sport OK?

It is a sport, can you do a triple twist or land a black flip on the beam? Gymnasts are probably the strongest female athletes. And cheerleaders come close behind them. Cheerleading is a sport, more injuries occur than in football. And if you actually tried it, you might actually understand how hard they train. Esp. gymnastics, they train over 6 hours a day, run over 3 miles for warm up. And you don't consider it a sport?

of course its a sport, not anyone can do it, it takes dedication and endurance, and practice and physical ability to be able to compete with other squads. Im sure all this you already know, but you are just hating just like all the other girls on here talking about that they are nothing but beauty contests, hahahahaha! Stop hating! ;)

My sister is a cheerleader (and I am total opposite-was totally grunge when I was her age and didn't care too much for cheerleaders) but... witnessing how hard her and her squad work, practice, and sweat to be good at what they do I agree it is a sport.

Well.. i guess you've seen the movie Bring it on.
That kind of cheerleadering i would consider a sport...
Since they compete instead of cheer.
The cheerleaders who cheer in football games etc, i wouldnt consider a sport...
since they just... cheer.

If they can call golf a sport, then everything is a sport and everyone is a sports star.

I agree, sports were things with teams, and scoring points, and theres a winner and a loser, yanno? Not a bunch of cheerleaders jumping around.

Other than for the fact that these days it seems cheerleaders are expected to be very atheletic, I think you're spot on. Cheerleading seems to be one of those things that started out as an innocent little snowball, and rolls and rolls and rolls, till it becomes a Monster mopping up everything in its wake. It's been given such enormous phony status now, that every girl who looks halfway decent and can turn a flip, wishes to hurl herself in its path and become sucked up into it in hopes of it carrying her somewhere "wonderful". Mothers beam as they tell their friends "My deah, I used to be a Cheerleader myself. I'm soooo proud of my daughtah that's she's one now"
And don't I seem to remember the case of a cheerleader's mom who was so enraged that another girl was upstaging her daughter, she paid somebody to kill the other mother, in hopes that it would throw that family into such a state, that the other girl would drop out and leave the way clear for her own daughter to take her place?.
I don't have a daughter, but if I did, I believe I would do everything possible to pursuade her to take pride in NOT being another one of the fritter-brains who would prefer to be a part of this showy spectacle rather than concentrate on doing what school was always supposed to be about. Learning.
