A really good story with compelling characters.
If I'm not hooked into the story in the first 20 minutes - I won't keep watching it.

It doesn't matter how great a writer is, YOU HAVE TO HAVE GOOD ACTORS!!! You need someone to portray every emotion and sometimes overdo the emotion to get the point across of what the character is feeling. The plot and the climax have to be good and NEVER leave the story with an open ending! I want to know what happens after the climax (ex. Harrison Ford in Firewall). I really get into movies. Cry, laugh out loud, get mad, get excited, I also try to figure out how the movie ends (drives my husband crazy). If the movie keeps me guessing and turns out better than anticipated, its usually one that I would buy.

Almost everybody's favourite movie is the one that makes them cry.

Write a tear jerker.

Or you can conclude your script with a powerful twist that does not cheat the audience. That how M Night Shamalayan got paid US$20 million for the script Unbreakable after his brilliant The Sixth Sense.

For me, I'm into horror, action and comedy. What keeps me interested is Gorey and fights and car chases and i love when something happens to the main characters, they get shot or drowned or blown up. But I hope that goes well for ya

suspense or comedy. or both together. a movie that keeps moving.
i hate movies that drone on and on and then at the very end something happens that makes your pulse jump.
a good movie keeps your pulse going solid and draws out your emotions.

it's the "hook" - you need to make the audience care about the people and the plot and make them want to find out how the story will end. If they don't care or the ending is obvious then yor hook has failed.

hm, now see, what keeps me watching is out of your hands...
The background music will grip me and hold me through a lukewarm film. (Not the drek Various Artist kind, but the symphonic kind of music....)
