Let x be Jerry's age in 1994.
(a) Write down in terms of x:
i) Tom's age in 1994.........................................
ii) Jerry's age in 2004........................................
iii) Tom's age in 2004.......................................
(b) In 2004, Tom was twice as old as Jerry.
i) Write down an equation in x............................

Aw, come on, it's not that hard...
Since you know that Jerry's age = x, and Tom is three times as old, then Tom's age = 3x.
Now you can write the first three:
i : 3x (Tom's age in 1994)
ii: x+10 (x is jerry's age in 1994, plus ten years)
iii: 3x+10 (same reasoning)
Now for (b)
Okay, in 2004 Tom is twice as old as Jerry (careful, this one *can* get a bit tricky):
i: x = J*2 (an equation in x -- tom is twice as old, or 2 times, jerry's age)
ii: assign a value to J for jerry's age, say 20, and it's:
x = 20 * 2
x = 40
iii: No way to tell this without some additional information! You have to know how old one of them was at some point in time...

If X represents Jerry's age in 1994. Then:
i. 3x
ii. x + 10
iii. 3x + 10
You have to look at the whole thing as one big problem, so for the next part, you have to use what you did previously.
i. 2(x + 10) (which can be simplified to 2x + 20) <-- The x + 10 represents Jerry's age in 2004, because remember, x represents Jerry's age in 1994 and you need to keep it that way.
ii. 2x + 20 equals Tom's age in 2004. But remember we made another equation for Tom's age in 2004 in the last set of problems - 3x + 10. So since they both represent Tom's age in 2004 and Tom can't have two different ages, you can set them equal to each other and solve for X.
3x + 10 = 2x + 20
x = 10
So, Jerry was 10 in 1994. Which he means he is 20 in 2004 (x + 10).
Tom will be 40 (3x + 10 or 2x + 20)
I hope that helped!

For part a
Jerry= X
i) Tom's age in 1994 = 3X
ii) Jerry's age in 2004= X+10
iii) Tom's age in 2004= 3X+10
Part b:
in 2004, Tom was twice as old as Jerry
That means for i) 3x+10= 2(X+10)
ii) 3X+10 =2x+20
3X-2X = 20-10
X=10
iii) Jerry was 20 in 2004
Tom was 40 in 2004

(a)
i) 3x
ii) x + 10
III) 3x +10
(b)
i) 2(x +10) = 3x +10
ii) 2x +20 = 3x +10
10 = x
iii) Jerry in 2004 was (10 + 10) 20
Tom in 2004 was (30 + 10) 40
