Q: In 1994 Tom was exactly three times as old as his son Jerry.

Let x be Jerry's age in 1994.

(a) Write down in terms of x:

i) Tom's age in 1994.........................................
ii) Jerry's age in 2004........................................
iii) Tom's age in 2004.......................................

(b) In 2004, Tom was twice as old as Jerry.

i) Write down an equation in x............................
ii) Solve this equation to find x............................
iii) How old were Jerry and Tom in 2004?..........

ii) x + 10
iii) 3x + 10

bi)2(x+10) = 2x + 20
ii) 2x + 20 = 3x + 10 => x = 10
iii) tom = 3(10) + 10 = 40
jerry = 10 + 10 = 20
total = 40 + 20 = 60

Toms age in 1994 was 3x
Jerry's age in 2004 was x+10
Tom's age in 2004 was 3x +10

3x+10= 2(x+10)
3x+10 =2x +20
x = 10
3(10) + 10 =40 = Tom's age in 2004
x+10 = 10 + 10 = 20 = Jerry's age in 2004

Answer 3

If Jerry is age x in 1994, then
(a)
(i) 3x
(ii) x + 10
(iii) 3x + 10

(b)
(i) 3x + 10 = 2(x + 10)
(ii) x = 10
(iii) x + 10 = 20 and 3x + 10 = 40
Therefore, in 2004, Jerry was 20 and Tom was 40.

And my comment:
First equation is one made out of first information (a):
x(Tom)=(is)3y(three times the age of Jerry)

The second equation is made out of next info (b):
x(Tom)+10(in 2004 - that's 10 years later)=(is)2(two times)(y+10(Jerry in 2004 - that's ten years later)

PS: Seems like I put x for Tom instead for Jerry. Change all x to y, and all y to x, and everything will be OK.
