No, people do not consider cheerleading a sport. It is a highlight to a sport.

It is defined as a sport by about half of US state school sport associations. Title IX boosted its recognition as such.

There are many people (including my husband) that only considers an activity to be a sport if a) there is an objective scoring system such as points made by baskets and b) there are two individuals or teams facing off at the same exact time in opposition to each other.

He says that if cheerleading competitions allowed opposing teams to try to knock down the performing team's pyramids, and if scores were tallied by an objective system such as counting up the number of cheerleaders to hit the floor during a pyramid tackle, then it would be a sport. And by his definition gymnastics, figure skating, and synchronized swmming are also not sports. However, he does ackowledge the athleticism of cheerleaders and gymnasts et al.

Umm.. I don't know why it's not on the lists of sports, but i definatly do consider it a sport. I consider cheerleading a sport especially Competition or all-star cheerleading because You have to be flexible for Jumps and if your a flyer. You have to be strong to be a base in stunts. Also you have to be strong to be able to tumble. And cheerleading is a dangerous for falling out of stunts and when you tumble and pulling muscles. Some people don't believe but if you would come to one of our practices then you would see that we have to work just as hard as any other sport.

idk, but it kind of makes me mad, because cheerleading IS a sport no matter who tries to say its not... I mean, we have to work hard, exercise, stretch, practice... we have a higher chance of dying then any other school sport!!! i mean, as a flyer, you could fall, land the wrong way and possibly break your neck, back or something else! But we have to go to camps, do fund raisers, we have competitions, practices... And even try-outs... I mean, what more do we need for everyone to consider it a sport? Lets see a footballer try to go out there and do a basket toss, or a hurkie!!! its hard work, the jumps are hard especially when your first learning... but i definitely think everyone should start considering it a sport... if you don't, let me know why, and what it would take... haidagirl_2009@yahoo.com !!!

No, because the purpose of cheering is to support mens' sports. And it's unhealthy anyway. Cheerleaders are notorious for treating each other badly and for doing horrible things to themselves to conform. If you want to be taken seriously as an athlete, play a sport.
