basically...im 16 and in a few months i have to chose with a-levels i will take. i know that i want to go into a design based job like product design and to do this i want to take DT, Bio and Chem. But my parents have desided that i have to take Physics, Maths and Advanced maths, im bright a probally could scrap a pass in those subjects but all they want is for be to be a enginereer they even have the course in suppost to do at uni desided. My problem is mainly though that if i dont do what they want me to do my dad has said that he will 'hand me the razor to slit my own wrists' (we dont exactly have a loving relationship) and i will by taken out of my school that i love and kicked out of home. i find this stupid as both my parents are in the design industry and yet they wont even consider me doing it. ive applyed to a state school that they dont know about. but i need to know if you think that it is worth doing a career that i no i will hate and fail in or having a family however ****

Here is what you do to keep yourself and your parents happy:
Go to college and register in the course of Industrial Engineering as a major and Product Design as a minor. These two go together like hand and glove.

You have the two first years to make up your mind as to what you really like/want to do before choosing your final major. By that time, you will have a very good idea as to what you prefer best between these two fields which, as I said, they are very close to each other and almost interchangeable.

So here you have accomplished two things, You are in the product design and also in engineering. So, this should make you happy as well as your parents.

By the way, keep in mind that in order for a product designer to be marketable, he/she will need an engineering degree.

Talking from personal experience.

Hope this helps

You could play: let's not and say we did. I am not sure what a levels are however. I am assuming you are applying to colleges, right?

You could find a school that has a major that you want but also has that engineering major thing your parents want as well. THEN, apply there, tell them you are going to major in engineering, but since you don't have to declare your major until you are a sophomore in college, you can declare another major and they won't know about it till graduation. Hope this helps.

Sweetie this is your decision...the rest of your life depends greatly upon you. Your parents have lived their lives, made their mistakes and learned from their successes. Now...it's your turn. Yes, your family want to see you succeed but only at what THEY want you to become. They live thru their children. But honey, I say talk to your counselor, they would definitely know more than we know. I greatly encourage you to pray for strength and believe in yourself. You are able to do any and everything that u desire. Your parents are just scared and want bragging rights. Baby, do what YOU gotta do!!!! Best wishes and make sure you talk to your counselor...

wow... umm... i think you're talking to the wrong people. You need to talk to a counselor or someone who can actually help you. Not just a bunch of people on the internet. Hope this helped!
