It is true; your problem is writer's block. Most writers tend to get this issue while trying to complete a novel. There are different kinds of writer's block, but you've already discovered yours. "Fear that your novel isn't good enough".

Personally, I get this one ALL the time. I start writing, then I think back, "Oh, but this isn't the best I can do." and I go back and redo it. It's a vicious circle. You have to make yourself continue to write, even if it means giving yourself a few rewards. Just finish! Later you can always go back and take things out. That's editing. :P

Getting stuck is different. Many times we as writers compose a superb story in our minds. We think it's above what everyone else can do, and then we begin writing. Then once you see it all down on paper, you think, "This isn't what it's suppose to be ..." Maybe this is because you haven't FULLY thought out the story. You kinda sorta know where you're going. Not exactly.

Oh no! Yeah, sorry, but I'm going to say it. You really need to get an outline. It took me almost a year before I finally realized I needed an outline. All that time I was in the same position as you. Anyways, outlines are difficult to start. Most of the time we just want to WRITE. "forget the stupid outline!" Outlines are the skeleton of the story. You don't need them TOTALLY detailed, but get one. Imagine if you finally are at the climax to your novel when suddenly you realize, oh gee, I'm not sure I know how to end this...The beginning was awesome but... And that's what an outline helps you get. The beginning, the middle, and the end! By taking the time to make an outline, you're saving yourself alot of writer's block.

So you have to try! NEVER think your story sucks. Everyone has a unique story to tell that no one else can. It's yours. Even if it isn't as flashy as Eragon or Harry Potter, if you finish it, imagine all that time you can use to fix it up!

Don't ever give up writing. You may find yourself starting new stories. This is normal. If you just CAN'T seem to finish the outline of one, maybe that's a sign that that story just won't work for you. Again and again.

Oh I'm sorry, I have to say this one more time. :P
YOU'RE STORY DOES NOT SUCK!!!!! *ahem* better now. :D Happy Writing!

Good advice from the others who have posted.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Here's what I've discovered lately: when you "try to write stories," you're choking off the flow of inspiration and creativity.

I've heard John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and others, in interviews where they talked about how they wrote their music. I remember Paul saying that whenever he needed a song, he just kind of "went out there to where the song was," wherever "that" is, he picked it up, and brought it back. It's like the song is out there, waiting to be picked up, and anyone can go find the songs. He just happens to know where to look.

In other words, he channeled a lot of the music he wrote.

John Lennon said just about the same thing.

Sounds kinda weird.

But give this a try. Next time you sit down to write, don't "try" to write; rather, "allow" it to come through. Your sitting down and giving yourself this time, being ready and open, will open the doors, and the more regularly you do this, the easier it will be to "listen" for your own song, or story, in this case.

Try it and you'll see what I mean.

I remember another author interview, someone who'd written hundreds of scripts for television shows in the '70s and '80s and '90s, and what he said was that he never ever wrote with the end result in mind. He wrote what he wanted to write, and didn't care what people might think about it. That just didn't matter to him. And he managed to make a mighty fine career out of writing in this way. Most everything he wrote was made into a TV show. By the time he was interviewed, he was writing novels and was on his tenth or 15th or something. Amazing.

Good luck to you!

Getting stuck is called writer's block. Happens to all good authors from time to time. Just stop writing and come back when you have a great idea for your story. I write stories all the time, and this happens to me so much that one story (around 80 pages) takes me years to finish! Good luck with the writing and maybe I'll see your name in a book someday! :)

Happens to the best of us...what I usually do is put the story aside when I get blocked. I try something else, then, about a month or 2 later, I try the first one again. Good luck!

What always works is to make an out line. Roughly picture you story and write down the impotent parts. You can add the detail later.

Unsure that you write your stories in English, I would suggest brushing up on grammar and punctuation as your first step to writing. Your question shows to the writers on this forum that you need to focus on correct penmanship. By learning and using correct writing principles, your confidence in writing will blossom.

"The Elements of Style," by Strunk and Williams, is an invaluable tool for the novice and accomplished writer. Get it. It only costs about $7.00.

yeah, its happening to me 2! im suffering with ideas. i keep changing my mind of the ideas ive written, i dont know how to put it together, then i start to think about how it seems similar to this book and that movie and how cheesy, cliche, typical etc.

the best thing to do is to write down your ideas first, and then you can let one idea lead to another and so on.
just write all your ideas. writing a good story is not easy. an itll take alot of time. its like you got an idea, quickly put it down on
paper. then leave it, and think about all your ideas for a few days and you might just be inspired by somthing new and youll know how to put your ideas together. patience is key.

so, just take your time, and look around for inspiration write the ideas, try to put it together. this could take months and years.

and when your done putting in the details, and start or finish writing maybe u would think it sucks coz u wrote it urself, so get some ppl to read it, n discuss with.
and listen to everyones advice here, theyre right.

i wish u luck.

getting stuck is ok. i think the best thing to do is to start another story on another good idea you have, and come back to the story once you get an idea.

you could ask a close friend to read what you already have and if he/she likes it you should keep on writing.
