My buddy has been telling me that this is a "really cool" hobby to get into. I asked him if any women are involved or if it's just a bunch of dudes playing with trains? I don't think my lady would be too happy with me getting involved in this hobby if it is just a male thing. Are there any tips you have for getting the women involved??? (note: It doesn't help that she finds my "railroading" buddy weird and nerdy) Thanks in advance

I've been involved with model railroading for about 20 years, on and off. While we occasionally hear of women in the hobby in the pages of Model Railroader magazine, I must say I have met only one or two women in the hobby. And yes, through my involvement with local and national organizations, I have discovered that many model railroaders are indeed nerdy, geeky, and occasionally malodorous. Keep in mind that you don't have to work with other people or get involved in clubs. Many model railroaders enjoy working on their hobby alone or just with family.

under no circumstances... i've got been doing it for quite a few years now, and understand your thoughts nonetheless. i've got had moments of frustration on my N-scale format (2 feet shelf around my 10x12ft room)... I surely have torn sections up as I comprehend i've got made layout errors or unrealistic plans. inclusive of your minimum area, i might somewhat look into development a small "backyard" and moving into the "Operations" end of railroading. some great books are available from Kalambach Publishing (the human beings who print form Railroading magazine), which comprise "real looking Operations on your form Railroad". good success !!

I love those things! I'm also sort of a tomboy though. My dad and I used to spend "quality time" together building it. Find a set that she would enjoy. I think they offer alot of different varieties of Model Railroads.

Here http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=416 you can find my favourite site about train models. If you are a beginner consider buying their ebook with a step by step guide to plan and build your first model railroad.
Cheers.
