Not just synth vs regular, I am looking for the grade and weight also. My used didn't come with an owners manual. Thanks for your help!!

VW recommends 5W-30 SAE, and they are currently recommendint synthetic, though good quality blend or Dino is acceptable.
Good Quality brands include Castrol, Valvoline, and Mobil One.

Start with 5W30 and check to see what kind of oil mileage you get. Contrary to popular opinion, an engine should use a bit of oil. This indicates the oil is getting along the cylinder walls to lubricate the piston rings, and so a bit will be burned. If oil consumption gets toward a quart per 500 miles, it's time to go up to 10W30. Change to a 5W20 or 10W20 in a very cold climate (twenty weight), or forty weight in a very hot climate or if the engine has extreme wear and extreme oil consumption. Most modern small 4-cylinder engines are made for 5W30.

10\30W. oil is good unless you live in extreme cold or hot weather cond. where you should go to 5\30, or 15\40 resp. Dont skimp on quality. Some 1bargain1 brands use rerefined oil and just doesnt` cut it.

Mobil 1 is the best oil on Earth. It costs a little more because it is synthetic, but it's worth it.

If you look in the glove box, there should be a manual in there that will tell you. If there isn't, ring up the dealer and ask, or ask at the parts store.

GO TO THEWW DEALER... THEY ALWAYS GIVE YOU THE CORRECT OIL. IF YOU PUT SOMETHING SOMEONE HERE SAYS THAT DOES NOT HAVE A 100% GUARANTEE
