That trans is comp controled and has servos that control the shifts. Not uncommon to have issues with these servos. They are on the bottom of the valvebody when you remove the pan they are right there. Would recomend taking it to a trans shop where they can be tested and replaced if needed.

Check both of the speed sensors. They control this and I had the exact same scenario with my 93 Chevrolet last year and one of mine was bad so changed both of them. Temp sensitive as when they start to go bad once the trans starts warming up the coil will open in the sensor and stop sending the signal to the computer. ALso the shifts can get rather hard even though won't shift all the way up. Speed sensors are around 35 bucks each if I remember right and just a 10 MM bolt holding each one in. Both are on the drivers side of the trans and don't have to remove a thing except the sensors. Takes about 15 minutes to change both of them. Be sure and clear the computer by either removing the battery for 15 minutes or so, or by removing the computer fuse for similar amount of time. The fact that you are able to get it back to working by restarting the engine makes the computer start back in a different mode and it will temporarily ignore the weak signal for a bit before it starts deciding not to shift. Great transmission that often gets a bum rap from this exact problem. No telling how many transmission shops have ripped folks off selling them "new" 480LE trans and they only replaced these two sensors. Be sure and change both as they wear at about the same time. The computer uses them for "in and out" speed signals to tell how much the clutches have worn in the transmission and to control the hydraulic pressure accordingly. If it fails to receive this signal enough it will assume that something is wrong enough to stop the upshifts. Sometimes this starts out as dropping out of overdrive when warm and then eventually mine got to where it didn't want to go into 3rd. I was actually going to the part store to get the sensors for just that problem when mine also stopped going into 3rd at all and then after turning a corner would not come out of first. Sensors got me back on the road and running great.

These transmissions eat shift solenoids. I kept having the same problem, replacing shift solenoids every 6 months.

Speed senors and shift solenoids cause problems like you describe. Have it scanned for codes relating to trans .
