to tune a guitar as correctly as possible, i would suggest using a guitar tuner and tune the strings from lowest to highest as "E, A, D, G, B, E". If you dont have a tuner, u can also find these notes by ear if you know where they are on a piano
If you dont have a guitar tuner or a key board, there are a couple of alternitives, some better than others. You can go to google.com and type in guitar tuner and find an interactive tuner, where you can click on each string individually and listen to how each one sounds.
If you dont have a computer for whatever odd reason, then your best bet is to tune the guitar to itself, which can be done by playing the one string open and the string right next to that that is higher, you press down on the 5th fret. The open note on the one string and the 5th fretted note on the other string should match. This process works for every string combination except for the 2nd highest string, which you have to fret at the 4th fret and match it with the open instead of the 5th.

It would be better if you went to a guitar center or a small guitar shop with about 20/30 bucks, ask them to show you the way of the tuning. then with that 30 some dollars buy a tuner (Make your life a lot easier) or your stuck tuning by ear or going to a music shop everytime your guitar goes out of tune.

If you have a piano or keyboard, you can tune it using that. The top string is a low "E", second octave down from middle C on a piano. After you get that string right, put your finger on the 5th fret of the top string, and play the string -- that's what you tune the second string (the one below it) to. Same goes for strings 2 and 3 until you get to the 4th string, when you have to use the 4th fret to get the tone for the 5th string, then back to the 5th fret for the 5th string to get the tone for the 6th string.
If you don't have a piano, just assume you got the first E string right, and tune from there. It'll sound fine, but you may not be able to play with other people as you'll probably be off :)

You go out and by a tuner. You play one pitch and then make sure the string has the same pitch.
