There are six cows altogether (3 & 3, or 2 & 4 in each of the hypothetical cow redistributions)...

1st farmer : x + 1 = y
2nd farmer: 2x = y + 1

This is now a simultaneous eq'n

x - y = -1
2x - y = 1 ( x by -1)

x - y = -1
-2x+ y = -1 ( add these two Equation)

-x = -2
x = 2 (substituting in to one of the pairs of equ'ns)
2 + 1 = 3 (y)

Therefore one farmer starts with 2 cows
and the other farmer starts with 3 cows.

Let the number of cows be x and x+2.
If x gives a cow to (x+2),
2(x-1) = x+2+1
2x-2 = x+3
2x-x = 3+2
x = 5

So they have got 5 and 7 cows each.

Farmer 1 = (Farmer 2) - 2
(Farmer 2) + 1 = 2(Farmer 1 - 1)

F1 = (2F1 - 2 - 1) - 2 = 2F1 - 5
F1 = 5
F2 = 7

One farmer has 5 cows, the other has 7.

let first farmer have x cows
let second farmer have y cows

x+1=y-1
y=x+2...........(1)

y+1=2(x-1)
y=2x-3..........(2)

equate (1) and(2)

x+2=2x-3
>>>x=5

substitute into (1)

y= x+2=5+2=7

therefore,first farmer has 5 cows,
second farmer has 7 cows

i hope that this helps

x = first farmer's cows
y = 2nd farmer's cows

x-1 =y+1
x+1 =2(y-1)
x-y=2, and
x-2y=-3
Subtract 2nd equation from first equation getting:
y= 5 = 2nd farmers cows
x=y+2 =7 =first farmer's cows
