I'm interested in buying The Sims 2 for my home computer, but I do not know if it would work on the model I have. Anyone with good computer knowledge, I would appretiate it ever so much if you could help me out. I have a Gateway 838GM Media Center Computer...here it is at this site...

From looking at your specs:

It should work just fine. Your computer should have any problem meeting the minimum specs needed for sims2 http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=21

If you find that the program runs too slow your computer has an available pci-express slot so you can upgrade to a fast graphics card fairly cheaply.

Your system is a little slow for new released video games, but for Sim 2 is okay. However, I recommend you to get 1Gbs RAM if you want to build a large citi, house,...for the game - Sim 2. If you live in U.S, you can go to libraries to borrow this game, I've seen many libraries have this game.
