I'm sure it wasn't the first robot movie, but I think one of the best was, 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'. Released in 1951, it starred Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal and Hugh Marlowe. The way this planet is headed today, a real visit from Gort the robot would do us good. KLAATU BARADA NIKTO !!!!

My best guess would be Metropolis (1927), directed by Fritz Lang. A real masterpiece, and it features Hel, a robot replica of the heroine Maria. It is an iconic image and you might have seen it before without ever realizing what it was from.
