I asked this question at school but with out the beer bit.I was told as a bird allows its self to relax as they go asleep the muscles controling the the legs and talons contract making the bird hang on tighter and tighter.To release this grip they have to lift their weight slightly.So I think beer may only make them grip tighter if maybe upside down.

When a bird lands on a branch, his muscles automatically contract so that his feet grasp the branch-----he must consciously let go in order to fly away. If he is sleeping, he cannot consciously release the muscles
