Way to soft in my opinioin. Even the US prison system i believe is too soft. If prisoners do serious crimes, they deserve serious punishments. A few years in prison only means a few years of free food, water, and a place to stay. If a man rapes your daughter, will you be satisfied with him just going to prison and getting life easy?- or do you believe he deserves to suffer more and maybe even get a taste of his own medicine...

The British justice system is still of the mentality that incarceration is an exercise in rehabilitation - a "humane" way of resolving the criminal mentality - as opposed to a punishment. That needs to change. Criminals should be punished AND be seen to be punished.
Unfortunately, while criminals are still in possession of their civil liberties, it will never happen.
To this end, there should be two domains of liberty: civil liberties afforded to those who behave in a civil way, and uncivil liberties for those who don't. If you break the law, your principal right should be the right to life with all other rights subject to nullification. However, we need to differentiate between "bad people" and the mentally ill here, because SIMPLY PUNISHING the mentally ill for crimes beyond their state of mind isn't as straight forward as it sounds.
I wholey agree that crime and punishment in the UK is beyond a joke, and the recent outcry regarding the mellowing of certain non-violent crimes to suit Government figures for the percieved reduction in crime doesn't help the issue at all. Couple that with the release back into society of criminals of every breed, simply because the prison service is overstretched, and we're heading toward a brick wall at 100 miles per hour. Without a seatbelt.
Nice one Tony. (Ever thought about chain gangs, mate?)

I was thinking of going there on vacation as one of Her Majesty's guests. You get a night guard for free, a couple of bodyguards from the met when you have to appear in public, a cook to prepare your meals and a roof over your head. Almost forgot, No bills. I'll answer all your questions from my little computer on broadband, all paid for baby.
Incase you wonder how I'll make my way there how about not paying for my council tax bill. Am paying too much for crap services.

Yes far to leinient it should be a punishment. I work with young people and some think it's actually good to be banged up judging by some peoples experience like, Money for cigarettes and playing on the playstation. It should be hard so you never want to return.
