Different crimes have different statutes of limitations. Minor ones may be only a couple years, generally no limit for murder.

Depends on the crime or civil action.

Civil actions:

Professional Malpractice: Professional negligence lawsuits, including medical malpractice actions, must ordinarily be filed within 1 year.

Personal Injury: 1 year.

Libel / Slander / Defamation: Libel, 1 year; Slander, 6 months.

Injury to Personal Property: 3 years.

Product Liability: 1 year.

Contracts: 6 years.

Under the Tennessee criminal statute of limitations laws, there is no statute of limitations for forcible rape. There is no statute of limitations for any offense punishable by life in prison, or by the death penalty. For these offenses, prosecution may begin even 77 years after the offense was committed.

Class A felonies 15 years.
Arson and Class B felonies, 8 years.
Class C and Class D felonies 4 years
The statute of limitations for Class E felonies is 2 years.
Misdemeanors, 1 year.

Crimes under state revenue laws, (tax evasion) 3 years.
Fraud, conspiracy, and tax evasion 6 years.
Aiding and abetting, counseling or advising and filing a false tax return 6 years
