I took the longest time to learn a back handspring. I had a lot of weird falls, my round-off was crooked, arms weren't strong enough. But I made an effort and got to being a level nine gymnast and quit. So, you aren't the only one, back handsprings are hard at first, but once you learn them, it's hard to forget!

My tips on doing a back handspring:
Practice on an incline mat. When you feel you are falling, its time to jump and jump hard! Keep your arms straight and strong and push off. Keep arms by your head at all times!
Arch a Little, but if you over arch it is a BIG mess.
Bend your knees slightly, arch a little bit, and push you shoulders open as much as you can. Then using your stomach, back, and arm muscles, snap your body back to a hollow position, pushing off your hands, and land on your feet on the floor in front of the board/mat.
Put it all together you should be able to do a back handspring.

Good luck!

Without actually seeing it, i can't guess what went wrong. I can however tell you what I did wrong when I landed on my head. The most common reason, other than weak takeoff, is foot slip. The best thing to do is to have someone spot you untill you have had enough practice. Since I was never formally trained, I have no idea what the "proper" steps are......... I just do it. For the last part of your question, people who can do that put a lot of effort into stretching and strengthening the muscles in the thighs, hips, and lower back.
