I am pursuing an MA in English and would like to tutor students that need assistance writing papers. I don't want to make prohibited postings at grocery stores, but I am all ready to advertise. Where should I start?

I began working with other students that had mathematics difficulty as a sophomore in high school. I started by talking with the mathematics teacher of high school algebra 1 students. I would suggest that you speak with your local high schoolEnglish teachers and guidance counselors. They can/should be your biggest sponsors in this endeavor. Many parents that begin looking for help will speak with one of them. Good Teaching...

I put up twelve posters around my local university and got four students that way. I also contacted my former middle school and high school (I was a star student!) and asked if they would put an ad in their monthly newsletter. Both schools did it for free, and I got another student that way. Pretty soon I had more students than spare time.

I will admit that I would also go around the campus with a red Sharpie marker and circle the grammar and spelling mistakes on other tutors' posters, leaving a short explanation of the mistake. I figured that those people weren't fit to tutor if they couldn't even make a decent poster. It's a good way to deal with your competition!

Get a website. Call local high schools. Ask your teachers/talk to your university about teaching oppurtunities. Ask your friends if they need help with anything so you can get a little practice. Spread the word around. Put up flyers wherever you can. Advertise on other websites. Tell your parents to ask around for clients for you. Have your parents spread the word around, maybe some of their friend's children need help with something. Be available anywhere.
