Paracetamol in pregnancy

Question:
Is Panadol safe to take during pregnancy ie for toothache or headache?

Answer:
Paracetamol (Panadol®) is safe to take in the recommended doses while you are pregnant. The recommended dose of paracetamol for pain relief is one to two 500 mg tablets every three to four hours, with a maximum of eight tablets in 24 hours.
Paracetamol is classed as a category A medication in pregnancy. Category A medications are those which have been taken by a large number of pregnant women or women of childbearing age without an increased frequency of malformations or other harmful effects on the developing baby having been observed. Therefore if a medication is needed to provide pain relief during pregnancy, paracetamol is a suitable choice.

Paracetamol is fine when pregnant, but only take it if you really feel the need, and don't take any other pain killers.

Further to an earlier answer, human trials are never going to be done because it's completely unethical to test drugs on pregnant women!!

Yes you can. Its the only thing I think you can safely take whilst pregnant. I have two healthy boys and I took Paracetamol for headaches during both my pregnancies.

Paracetamol is the only painkiller recommended when you're pregnant. But if you're still unsure, consult your pharmacist (or midwife, even) on the dosage.

Always check with your doctor first. But the pregnancy category risk is B, meaning animal studies have shown no harm to the fetus, but no studies have been done on humans, or animal studies have shown some harm to the fetus but not enough studies have been conducted on human yet.
