For Heaven's sake PLEASE disregard the answer above that suggested you eat spicy foods, have sex and go swimming if you have lost your mucous plug!!!

Those activities can be dangerous to you and your baby if you have lost your plug, and they do not grow back! The mucous plug will keep bacteria and other debris away from the inside of the uterus, and, without it, sex, swimming and other activities are dangerous. Even tub baths are not recommended once you have lost your plug.

You may go into labor at any time, so I'd avoid any type of spicy foods (and semen???) because if you should go into labor, these things will cause you to have nausea and possible vomiting while you are in labor.

At 40 weeks, you should be resting and preparing for birth, not running sexual marathons anyway...

Sometimes, sometimes chunks just fall out --it regenerates.

Also the mucous plug is WAY bigger than you think it is so even if you think you have lost it all you may not have.

BTW dilating doesn't mean you are or will go into labour anytime soon. But don't worry the baby will come out when he/he is ready!

Though feel free to try the "fun" things to get things going:
Sex
Nipple stimulation
Swallowing semen
Swining
Eating spicy food
Going up and down elevators

I am pretty sure it means you are dilating, but it can still be awhile before you go into labor. I started losing mine about 2.5 weeks before I went into labor. How far along are you??

Good luck!!

Sounds like you may be going soon. I have heard some woman go within 48 hrs after losing their plug, but everyone is different!!

It does mean that your dilating, but maybe not in labor yet. It could be very soon or in a week or so. It depends on your body. If you start any cramping, I would call the dr.

I lost my plug with my first one, about three days before delivery, I was induced though two days after due date.

I lost my plug with my second a month before delivery, once again I had to be induced due to being almost two weeks late.

It is a general sign that the cervix is beginning to ripen and soften, and getting ready to dialate. with my first one, I lost it and wasn't dialating at all. With my second I was at 3 cent. before I lost it.

Losing your plug means labour will be starting. You can lose you plug weeks before labour starts, or just before. If you have blood when you wipe, you are in labour. Good luck and congratulations!
