I think it is a stupid concept. It tells the opposition that your batsmen are too frightened to come and face them because they lack the confidence that they can survive a few overs. If a 'rookie' batsmen is expected to survive, shouldn't a fully-fledged batsman? It distorts the batting order of the team, forcing proper batsmen to come in later and risk running out of partners. If the nightwatchman hangs around for too long the next day, the batting team can lose momentum; if he is out quickly, the fielding side get a nice start to the day!

Whats not to support? Its only sensible that any team does not want to risk loosing another main batsman close to the end of a day's play.

Besides, these days most nightwatchmen are actually very able batsmen even if they would normally bat low down in the order...and several nightwatchmen have scored centuries in test cricket.

As with everything else in cricket it is well tried and trusted. The most frustrated nightwatchman must be Alex Tudor of England who finished 99 not out.

Yes, when I'm not on the bowling side - then it stinks!

But, "what's good for the goose is good for the gander" as they say.
