You can't track them by GPS (or at least I'm not smart enough to know how) what they are used for is when they get lost. Microchips act like sort of a unremovable collar, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't put a collar on your dog. Anyways, when your dog is found lost without tags, the shelter that found him will scan your dog with a machine that sort of looks like a metal detector, and if your dog has a chip, then it will show the chip number, and then they can look up your address in a computer database. PS if you dont register your microchip, they can't find your address to send your dog home, so get it registered!

My understanding, but this was when Chipping was brand new, was they only worked like Bar Codes.

This being that if your pet was found by a state of the art place, they would scan the neck and some other areas with something that would detect if they had a chip and only while over the chip would it react and communicate information to the person holding it. And that may have only been a long number at the time.

It's an RFID chip embedded in a glass capsule, it has nothing to do with GPS. It's the same technology that retail stores use for inventory control (the scanners you walk through on the way out the door) It can only be read by a device in very close proximity to it. Vets & shelters have the readers, and will scan an animal when they are first given it. The hope is, that if your animal gets lost or stolen, a vet or shelter will ID the animal and return it to you.

They are different. The microchip is when your pet gets lost and is brought somewhere they can scan it and find out where he belongs.
