Every trait has 2 genes that determine it, one from the father and one from the mother. Homozygous means that the genes were both the same. This could be a dominant trait or a recessive trait. Recessive needs both the genes to show. Dominant traits will show with just one gene for the trait.Homozygous just means that the genes were the same.
Homozygous is also used to refer to identical twins as they both came from the same egg,homozygous, and not 2 different eggs or hetrozygous.

Homozygous is when the two alleles of a particular gene are the same. Say that T is for tall pea plants and t is for short pea plants. Then the trait will be homozygous if the alleles read TT or tt. They will NOT be homozygous if it reads Tt. So basically it is just two of the same alleles on a certian gene that express a trait.

As you know, we have 2 copies of every gene, one from your mother, one from your father. When both copies are exactly the same, you are homozygous for that gene. When one copy is different than the other copy, you are heterozygous for that gene.
For example, if one of your parents was a carrier for cystic fibrosis, and the other was not, you might have one normal gene, and one gene containing a mutation that causes cystic fibrosis. This would mean that you are heterozygous for the cystic fibrosis gene. Since CF is inherited RECESSIVELY, you would not be affected by the disease.
