Without the harddrive, the only games you can play right out of the box is Halo and Halo 2. MS isn't stupid enough to exclude 2 of their most popular games from the 360's backward compatible games. You will need a harddrive if you want to play XBX games.

You don't need XBL to download the software emu to play XBX games. You can request a disk be sent to you that contains the latest patch or you can download it from your computer to a disk, then load the disk on the 360 to get the latest patch. But if you already have high speed internet access, might as well join XBL (silver membership is free, and it lets you download the latest patch. gold membership is only $50 for a year.) to save yourself the trouble of having to dl the patch to a disk and then copy it to your 360's harddrive.

MS was very misleading when it said that the 360 is backward compatible with XBX games. It's not totally true. Only a small percentage of XBX games can be played on the 360. As programmers write the software emu for the games, more and more games will be added to the BC list.

Ok no you do not necessarily need xbox live to play xbox games. Go to the site below and download the software they have to play original xbox games. Now once you download it burn it to a cd or dvd as a data disk and pop it in the 360 and it should begin to install the update automatically. Now this update does not support ALL xbox games. In order to play every single one you would have to buy the disk for like a couple bucks. But this one has alot of games that are capable already. Ok now once you get to the site scroll down almost half way to where it says : Download the Original Xbox Game Support
August 2006 update here. Then click here and a download should pop up! Ok hope I could help. If you have any other questions email me at my answers name @yahoo.com

I think they are required. I've read that somewhere also. You have to download updates for each individual game, so I guess it needs to the hard drive to store those updates, and the internet connection to download them so they will work in the first place. Also, not all xbox 1 games will play on the 360. Here is the list of games that will:
