If the hd simply won't detect in any machine it's put in it's bad. I'm assuming you've tried it in more than 1 machine and with different IDE cables as to eliminate the possibility that the pc or cable is defective. There is a "freezer trick" where you put the drive in a freezer that MIGHT bring it back to life (albiet for a VERY short time span) to extract data. Notice that this "trick" has a low success rate, about...it works about 5-10% of the time. Otherwise you have to look at data recovery companies which tend to be VERY expensive.

I bet we've learned to back up our data NOW haven't we? :D

asuming the following:
cables are correctly plugged in (red line near to power plug for ide drives) and power molex working and plugged in
The drive is not knocking, screeching or making similar noises
The bios autodetect or manual detect feature produces no results

You can take the drive to a recovery firm, they charge you recovery fees per megabyte, and they are very expensive.
