Good question.

There are two kinds of 'nice people'. There are the ones who feel obligated to be nice, and those who choose to be nice. A big difference exists beteween the two categories.

The people who feel obligated to be nice usually struggle with low self-esteem. And I know because I have been that kind of person in the past. I was raised to believe that everyone was better than me and my family, so it was just expected that we had to be super-nice to everyone else. But what a horrible existence!

What I realised as I matured, when I stopped to look at myself honestly, was that I had some really great qualities as a person. I am honest, have integrity, a good sense of humour, am highly literate, I have excellent social skills, and am a hard worker. I have no reason to feel like I am under any obligation to be nice to everyone - especially people who treat me like dirt.

That was when I became a person who 'chooses' to be nice, when I feel it's appropriate and acceptable. I don't have to be nice to everyone, but am never unkind unless it's provoked. I have every right to stand up for myself and be rude back to someone if they are rude to me. My self-esteem is not dictated by other people's opinions of me - I know who I am.

In conclusion, yes people can be 'nice' because they feel like they are unworthy (low self-esteem). Or we can be nice because we have made a conscious decision on the matter. And those two differences are definitely down to where a person's estimation of themself lies.

I think alot about that question. Glad you brought it up!

Nice people are generally considerate of others.

I don't think they have a low self esteem at all.

I don't think self esteem has much to do with whether or not a person is nice. I believe it has to do with a combination of nature and nurture.
